This
JOB ALBRO
was born the 24
th
of July, 1743 in West Greenwich, Kent, RI according
to the LDS FGR for AFN:HZPH-XK
95
. Arnold's Vital Records of Rhode Island
70
indicates that this was in fact the date he was
christened. His parents are listed as
John Albro
and
Lydia Spencer
70,95,96
. His date of death is given as 26 April 1824
95
, in Edinburg, Saratoga, NY. These dates, 1743 and
1824, also appear in the D.A.R. record for Mrs. Gertrude
Lawrence Shearer
97
The LDS FGR states that Job was married to
Deborah Andrews
(b. abt.1747 in Kent Co., RI, parents not listed)
on November 18
th
, 1764 in East Greenwich, RI, and to
Eunice Potter
(b. 1 Feb 1745 in Dartmouth, Bristol, MA, d.1831,
daughter of
Nathaniel Potter
and
Mary Carr
) on
May 9
th
, 1779 in Dartmouth, Bristol, MA.
That Deborah Andrews (of East Greenwich, RI) did marry a Job
Albro (of West Greenwich, RI) in Greenwich, Rhode Island on 18
November 1764 is attested by Arnold
70
,
and cited
98
in LDS IGI batch M501921. Whether the marriage
occurred in East or West Greenwich is uncertain, since it was
recorded in both places.
Deborah Sawyer Andrews'
date of birth is given as
abt.1751 in Gloucester, Essex, MA, LDS IGI film 962431 p.899
ref.18877; her christening as August 18
th
1751 in Gloucester, Essex, MA, LDS IGI batch 7031321
source 0538669 sheet 79. Both give her parents' names as
John Andrews
and
Eunice Sawyer
. Is this the same
Deborah Andrews? The best evidence may be names of two of the
children attributed
95
to Job Albro and Deborah Andrews.
Andrew
(or
Andrews)
Albro
was stated
95
to have been born in Providence, RI abt. 1764 and
died in Edinburgh, Saratoga, NY aft. 1818. Census records show
Andrew Albro in Saratoga, NY in 1810 - 1840. He was listed as
77 in 1840, which fits. "Andrew" for Deborah Andrews? Secondly,
Eunice Albro
, stated
95
to have been born in Kent Co., RI abt 1767 and
married to Job King, could have been named after Eunice Sawyer.
The only problem is, Deborah Sawyer Andrews would have been
only 13 in 1764, the time of her supposed marriage. Thus there is evidence both for and against this being
the Deborah Andrews married
70
to Job Albro.
The marriage of Eunice Potter to a Job Albro is recorded in
LDS IGI batch M500031, taken from Vital Records of Dartmouth,
Massachusetts
44
.
Martha Benns' "Notes on the Albro Family of Rhode
Island
12
" states that this Job Albro married a Huldah.
Darrell Conder in his "Albro Family History
6
" extrapolated this to
Huldah Tallman
, daughter of
Benjamin Tallman
and
Elizabeth Gorton
, of Tiverton, Newport, RI. She was born September 15
th
, 1749
96,99
and died before 1779. The DAR Patriot Index
100
lists Job Albro, b. 24 July 1743 RI, d. 1832, Pvt RI, m. Huldah Tallman.
Children associated with these various marriages include
Andrews
(or Andrew),
Sarah
,
Eunice
,
Mary
, and
Spencer Albro
(mother Deborah)
95
,
Huldah
and
Caleb Albro
(mother Huldah)
12,45
, and
Benjamin
,
Stephen
,
Samuel C
, and
Elizabeth Albro
(mother Eunice)
45
. As will be seen shortly, there is a slight problem
with the assignments.
Federal census records confirm that Job was living in
Washington County, NY in 1790 and 1800. In 1810 he was in
Saratoga County, NY and in 1820 and 1830 (!) we find him listed
specifically in Edinburgh, Saratoga, NY. His will is recorded
as Co.46, vol.8, p.394 in Edinburgh, Saratoga, NY. The first
real controversy, then, is Job's date of death. At this point
we have two dates, 1824
95
and 1832
100
.
The Eunice Potter who supposedly married Job Albro in
Dartmouth, Bristol, MA
43,95
was also stated to have been born there. No children
were listed in the FGR
95
or other on-line records of the LDS.
Job's involvement in the Revolutionary War
is described in File S-46019
101
. He apparently enlisted twice, once in Spring of
1775 (Captain Archibald Crary, Col. James M. Varnum's regiment)
and again in Spring of 1776 (Captain Elijah Lewis, Col.
Varnum's regiment.) He was wounded (broken arm) at the battle
of Harlem.
One probable error in this report is the statement that he
enlisted at Greenwich, Long Island. Since this area was not in
American hands at the time, the correct place is almost
certainly Greenwich, Rhode Island. He applied for a pension at
age 75, which was supposedly awarded on June 10, 1818, Roll of
New York (Eight dollars a month.) The Certificate of Pension
was issued the 23
rd
of October 1822, indicating 50 months at a total of $454.60, arrears.
One can find another date of death for Job(e) in the pension records
148, of 15 December 1830.
A sworn statement made to "Avery R", a judge in the Court of
Common Pleas in Saratoga, NY, states that "Jobe Albro" (who
couldn't write and signed with an X) enlisted in Greenwich, RI
originally, and in the state of Massachusetts the second time,
honorably discharged at Fishkill, NY in 1777. A second sworn
statement by H.W. Palmer, Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas in
Saratoga, NY, indicates that "Jobe", now age 79, applied again
for a pension in 1822 stating that he still has no income, is
living with an infirm wife aged "about" 79, and a widowed
daughter, and can not support them without help. [Note: The daughter
would be Mary, whose husband died some time after 1800
45
- PWA] The clerk stated that Jobe's total property
was worth $8.50. Note that the wife aged abt. 79 in 1822 would
have been born abt. 1743, which doesn't quite match any of our
candidates. But if Job couldn't write, he probably wasn't all
that good at math either.
Yet another sworn statement, this time by Samuel C. Albro to
William S. Briggs, judge in Yates County, NY, was recorded on
December 3
rd
, 1857. Samuel stated that he was 65 years old, a
resident of Jerusalem, Yates, NY, and the only surviving child
of Job and Eunice Albro; that his father was a private in the
Revolutionary War on the Rhode Island Line, died in Saratoga,
NY on or about the 26
th
of April, 1825, survived by Eunice his wife and
several children. Samuel stated that Job and Eunice were
married in the town of North Windsor, Washington, Rhode Island,
by Elder Brown, a Baptist clergyman, sometime in 1780 or 1781.
Eunice supposedly died at Maumee City, OH on or about the 26
th
of November, 1846, survived by daughter Mary Bucher
and himself. Mary died before 1857. Eunice was supposedly
entitled to a pension, but never applied for or received one;
Samuel was therefore applying for the benefits due this family.
Samuel's testimony was supported by a sworn statement from
David Thurston, age 65, a resident of Jerusalem, Yates, NY, to
Charles H. Vail, Justice of the Peace in Yates County, December
3
rd
, 1857. He stated that he had seen a record of the
marriage of Job and Eunice in their family Bible, that it said
they were married in North Kingstown, RI in 1780 or 1781. He
further stated that he was present at Job's funeral on or about
April 26
th
, 1825, that Job and Eunice had had children Stephen,
Benjamin, Sarah, Andrew, Mary and Samuel C., and that all were
dead except Samuel C.
Frank J. Doherty states
102
that a Job Albro died in Edinburgh, Saratoga, NY in
1833. This is supposedly taken from "One Line of Descent from
John Albro of Portsmouth" by Imogene Zook Beck, n.d. Is this
the same Job Albro?
This gives us five dates of death for Job,
April 26, 1824, April 26, 1825, December 15, 1830, 1832 and 1833. We
have two claims for the marriage to Eunice Potter, Dartmouth, Bristol,
MA on May 9, 1779 and North Kingstown, Washington, RI in 1780 or '81.
(I am discounting the "North Windsor, RI", since there isn't one.)
The testimony of David Thurston implies that
Sarah, Mary and Andrew were children of Job and Eunice, while
the LDS FGR (Ref.95) has them as children of Job and
Deborah.
Sarah supposedly died before 1810 in
Washington Co., NY
95
, Eunice had moved to Ohio
95
and died 11 October 1850, Benjamin reportedly lived to 1865
45
, while the dates of death for Stephen, Elizabeth, Spencer and Mary are not
reported.
If this date for Benjamin is correct, he would
have been alive at the time Samuel C. was testifying that he
was the only surviving child. Note also the discrepancy in date
of death for Eunice Potter Albro - 1831 in the LDS FGR
95
and 1846 in Samuel's testimony
101
. The latter date would make her 101 years of age at death.
