The Case of Sarah Wood

Ah, so you want a story about Sarah Ella Eldora Oldham Raines Ferrington Robbins Philabaum Wood and her 11 children by three different husbands, three of which were born too early, if you know what I mean, at a time in history when four divorces was frowned upon so you left out some of the previous marriages on the next marriage records and used different given names to buffer the whole thing and claimed to be a widow when you were NEVER widowed until it becomes practically a joke and you are entertained by giving false information to census takers and city directories. And of course you had a peculiar habit of putting nothing but pet names on your children's stones, like Lovie R instead of Levi Robbins. And you "took in" at least three children and called them your own, though you only officially adopted one and you gave up another for adoption. Yes I know the kind of story you are talking about. You mean one of those 15 years on one person stories that never seems to end and with each new document you discover you only add more questions. Yeah. (Forgive the run-on sentences. I was just making a point :)) Oh yeah I forgot, and you weren't raised by your real parents because your mother didn't keep you when your dad died when you were only three. Consequently one of your sons thought your maiden name was Clark and recorded it as such on his marriage record. Oh yes and I also forgot to mention how the only box in the courthouse basement that had the latch broken off was the one that held the divorce I wanted and when I tried to pry it open with my pen, the pen broke and ink was running everywhere and I had nothing to wipe it up with but precious documents so I just left it, hoping no one would use the basement until it dried and I tried to hide my hands while I paid, so the woman wouldn't see all the ink all over me and know it was me that left the big mess. (Yeah, that was a pretty good story :)) The last document I finally located. All I needed was this one last divorce and I could finally close the book on Sarah Ella Eldora Oldham Raines Ferrington Robbins Philabaum Wood. This was going to tie it all up. I opened it up and read it and it says she bore him seven children. Well I only knew about five of them. I would have pulled my hair out but there was ink all over my hands. (But you know what Phil, I had more fun with her than with any other ancestor. So it's all in how you look at it I suppose.)
